Goodman GSC14 Central Air Conditioner Overview

The Goodman GSC14 is a discontinued air conditioner with a cooling efficiency of up to 14 SEER. It featured a high-performance scroll compressor and a factory-installed in-line filter dryer. The condenser coil was constructed of corrugated aluminum fins and rifled refrigerator-grade copper tubing. An 850-RPM motor, a three-bladed fan and a louvered sound-control top provided quiet performance, while a heavy-gauge galvanized steel cabinet with painted finish protected the unit from the elements.

"Recommended very good performance for 10 years now"

5.0 rating

I would be delighted to review my Goodman split system and give it a satisfactory rating. It mystifies me why the industry feels a need to bash the brand any time their name is mentioned. I already know what's inside, and I did a ton of research to find out what is the source of all this bad blood. Best I can figure is the unit's low cost puts huge dents in their profits, and that's why you about have to hog tie a dealer and hold them down to get them to sell you one. I taught myself how to do air conditioning out of defense years ago. I'm an electronic troubleshooter by trade, thus there's nothing in this system that's a mystery. In 10 years I've had two genuine repair actions; one compressor at 9 years, and one motor start capacitor at 5 years. Since Copeland makes the compressor, and the capacitor is made in China, it is difficult to assess blame to Goodman for individual components they bought on the open market place. For 2-3 years the furnace gave me won't start fits intermittently, and my dealer responded as best they could to every one. They replaced many good parts in an attempt to make some kind of head way, but they didn't get anywhere. I happened to stumble into the problem while trying to get it to start out of frustration. When I found the trouble it was in my own house wiring which indeed is my problem. In the 10-15 trips out here over a 10 year period I can't lay blame on Goodman with any of them. Neither do I believe that another more expensive brand would have any less failures. The system's performance has been adequate, and I think I received an extremely good value for what I paid. I still get aggravated any time I have to listen to another Goodman speech. I know there's nothing wrong with the brand, and I sure am fed up with listening to the bashing. An educated customer isn't going to believe it anyway, and they are only preaching to the choir which is pointless from the beginning. I am delighted with the performance of this system, and I'd recommend the brand to anyone. I would also buy another Goodman at such time there's something in the marketplace significantly better than what I already have ' and that isn't now.

"Total disappointment"

For 7 years since I've had this Goodman AC unit, which is of the same age as my house, it has been a total disappointment. The house builder was the one who choose it and spoke highly about it. Don't ever take the builder's word for granted. Every summer I am faced with a new problem that costs tons of money to get it fixed, thinking it will be the last until the following summer when another different one pops up. First: After one year the starter capacitor got blown and cost $440 to replace. 2nd: a broken condensation pan under the evaporator coil which leaked the condensed water to the basement floor and flooded it. The water also burned the blower motor. 3rd: The electrical wires to the compressor motor were non protected wires passing over the hot copper pipes on the outdoor unit. The wire's isolation got ruptured and created sparks with the pipe. These sparks put a hole on the pipe and leaked the whole R22 refrigerant. 4th: The electrical socket of the compressor motor got burned with excessive heat from the motor body that created a short circuit at the wires and stopped the unit from working anymore. Totally tired and exhausted from one problem after the other. Finally decided to replace it with another brand of better quality that's worth the money you pay for it.

"Goodman Poor Reliability"

Goodman units are used in new homes by contractors because they are cheap and do the basic job. If they really cared, they'd install Trane or some other reputable equipment. Nonetheless, just moved into a 4-year old home with a 5-ton downstairs unit, and bam, leak, bad compressor, coils. And today, saw repairmen outside with my neighbor's unit apart as well. Goodman is good for about 4 years, period. Sadly, I have the smaller unit for upstairs too and hoping if it goes out in the next year that the home warranty will cover it. Goodman should be ashamed, but with the brisk business they get from builders, what do they care? They are not replacing my unit which they should, BTU swapping parts out – meaning they'll give us the parts but only when we give them the old ones. Guess you have to bury the evidence, eh? I would not guess it to be for quality control or there wouldn't be so many people with problems. Those of you who like Goodman, consider yourselves lucky!
