"After 9.5 years, still running like a train"

We had our 2-ton Trane XL16i single-stage ac installed in spring of 2009, along with a 2-ton Trane xv95 furnace for the main floor of our 2-story home. They have worked perfectly, meaning absolutely no problems with either in the 9 1/2 years we've owned them. I'll put in a plug for the guys from Cool-Ray who arrived at 8 am and stayed until after 5 pm doing the installation (and that did not include any duct work). It was a straight replacement of an older builder grade Trane system. For the folks in the Atlanta area, Cool-Ray now does mainly Carrier installations and not Trane, but hopefully they still do the same high quality installations (and installation is the key for any system).

"How To Stop A Trace, Buy one!!!"

The ac lasted 5 years. Had to repair each year after. New motors (5 total), Leakes, and compressor noise. Compressor finally burned out on 9th year. (Arox $3000 of repairs) Trane was no help, by year 8 they told me my system was too old. The Trade Dealers they referred me to during this ordeal, once I told them there was a problem, did not want to know anything. How Do You Stop A Trane? BUY ONE!!!!!!!!!

"Really Disappointed"

Can't cool the house when our 22-year old model we replaced did a better job. Freezes up for no particular reason, requiring repairs pretty consistently every year. Had a hepa filter that we had removed just to make it keep our house a "cool" 82 in the summer. Granted we do live in Phoenix.

"Trane XL 16i is a lemon…"

We had the xl 16I installed 9 years ago. The first year was good but it seems like we had a problem every year thereafter. 2 motor blowers, 2 coils and now the compressor. My installer is now recommending we scrap the system and put in another Trane. I will put in a new system but not a Trane. I can't believe that there are so many complaints and company is not addressing the problems. The customer service people are very nice but they are no help… Anyone have any suggestions who to contact higher up in the company to get some satisfaction. This situation is very frustrating.

"Don't make same mistake as I did"

Very good unit but be very Careful of the warranty. I registered a total unit as required. I was never told that the thermostat had to be registered separately. Am I the only idiot that would think the thermostat is part of the unit? The thermostat went out eighteen months after installation and Trane refuses to cover, saying the thermostat was no longer covered since it was not separately registered. If you register you get five years on the thermostat and one year if you don'T. I guess I am sol. Don't make the same Mistake Register your thermostat in addition to your unit or you could be looking at a $400 Replacement thermostat on an 18 month unit

Users on gardenweb.com also like Trane, and preferred the XL16i to air conditioners from Lennox. But they agreed that the 16i might be unnecessary compared to lower-level models from Trane. Occasional complaints refer to strange noises and adverse effects on humidity.
