Laars Mascot II Boiler Overview

The Laars Mascot II is a discontinued wall mounted condensing gas boiler. The Mascot II was Energy Star qualified, with an efficiency of 95.0% AFUE, and could be used as a heating-only or combination heat and hot water (combi) boiler. It featured a stainless steel primary heat exchanger with externally welded manifolds, and a stainless steel brazed plate DHW secondary heat exchanger with advanced flow switch on combi models. A variable speed blower maintained quiet operation, and a direct spark ignition provided reliable start-up. The Mascot II came with a primeless condensate trap and a built-in expansion tank which held up to 26 gallons of water. The unit was equipped with an LCD push button control system to help monitor furnace operation and functions.

"Nothing but $$$ out of my pocket"

I had to replace my older boiler and this was the one the company recommended for me. I tried researching it back then, but there were no reviews on it to be found at the time. Installing this has been quite problematic for me. Every year I have maintenance and every year it still has one or two problems, causing no heat or no hot water. It's been extremely inconvenient. Sometimes the issue is as simple as something needing to be cleaned, but a number of times I've had to replace very expensive parts, including the main system board. Luckily most of these were under the 5-year warranty I got from the company that put it in, but now my warranty has expired and I worry what else will go wrong with this. Like clockwork, every year sometime during the spring there are issues, especially once I start turning off the heat. Sometimes it just randomly stops working with an error code and I reset it and it's fine for a while longer, but it's pretty frequent that it happens. Just in general this thing is seriously problematic.

Since the day of installation, it has not worked right. It got to the point where I was calling my plumber once a week to come and fix it. The LAARS people even came down, checked it out, and said it was working properly. Twelve years later, I had to call the plumber again to replace a valve so I could get hot water. This company should be ashamed of themselves. No wonder it was discontinued.

"LARS Crap"

My contractor installed this boiler (heat & h/w) in December 2012. It took nearly a month of continuous service calls to finally get it working. It only worked for 2 heating seasons. The contractor who installed it won't service it anymore and it's out of warranty. The system cost me $7,800. Fortunately, I have an alternative electric baseboard system as back-up (the plan was to have lars replace it) but because of the extreme cold this season I made another attempt to get it working. This new contractor has tried but failed as well. He was told by lars that the system needed a new control panel, which he purchased for $400+ but that hasn't worked. He told me that lars has the absolute worst customer service he's ever seen. They're not available weekends in an emergency and they keep shuttling him from desk to desk and then hanging- up. It's a real Mickey Mouse operation. A nightmare. You've been forewarned – buy a lars product and you can expect nothing but problems, aggravation plus no heat of hot water. Lars products are crap.

We bought our new house in July 2016. The laars Mascot II had been installed about 2 years prior and we were very excited to have a 95% efficiency boiler in our new-to-us house. A month after moving in, we found ourselves without hot water and had to have the mixing valve replaced ($300). It is now December and this boiler is having a seriously hard time keeping up with the New England winter. It takes hours to go up from an overnight temp of 65 to 68 degrees. As it stands, I need to again call the plumber to come and fix it because my heat just isn't turning on. This shouldn't be happening on a 2 year old boiler. The only good thing about it is that I can take a shower and wash dishes at the same time. I would not recommend this boiler.

Other Mascot II Reviews

Among the few reviews regarding the Mascot II on HVAC forums, a consumer on heatinghelp.com complained of an error code 173 and 174 and the unit not coming on when there was a call for hot water. Another member suggested that he reset the module. On gbt.buildcentral.com, a consumer with a short cycling unit was told by other members that the problem was most likely due to poor installation, with either improperly-sized pipe or an improperly-sized boiler.
