Laars Mascot Boiler Overview

The Laars Mascot is a discontinued high-efficiency, wall-mounted condensing combi boiler with up to 96% efficiency. It featured a stainless steel primary heat exchanger with externally welded manifolds, and a stainless steel brazed plate secondary heat exchanger for almost instantaneous direct hot water. The unit included a digital display of temperatures and fault codes to help monitor furnace operation and functions. A variable speed blower maintained quiet operation, and a direct spark ignition provided reliable start-ups. The boiler was set up for natural gas and easily converted to LP gas. The Mascot’s compact design allowed for installation in alcoves, laundry rooms and closets.

Changed from an old clunky boiler to this sleek wall hung boiler. Never can be happier. Recapture a lot of space in our basement, fuel bills low and all the hot water we need.

I have had a Laars Mascot combination forced hot water and domestic water system installed in my house for 5 years. It drives 5 zones of standard force hot water baseboard and one zone of radiant heat plus hot water for 3 bathrooms. The system was installed by my "old school" plumber who followed the instructions but did get stuck on final setup and calibration – he called in a Laars representative who did the final setup. System has been operating fine, but does only service one shower at a time as expected. Had one failure at year 4, a temp sensor went bad, shutting down the system in the winter. Parts were available with a one day delay from a central New Hampshire warehouse and I now maintain the system with the help of a more technically savvy local heating company who understands the product. This product was made in Europe and imported by Laars while they developed a domestically manufactured system. I have a rental unit that I plan to install a similar system in this year and am considering the Made in U.S. Mascot LX.

"A terrible investment"

This boiler is very efficient, when it works. I've spent almost $2,000.00 fixing this piece of garbage over the past 2 years. And the boiler is only 4 years old. I regret buying this boiler every time I look at it. Shoddy engineering and extremely expensive parts. I spent $640.00 on it today and still have no heat. It is junk- stay away.

"Don't get this one!"

The first one had to be replaced within the year. After babying the second one for several years, it has now failed as well.

"Laars Mascot – poor quality"

My general contractors "heating guy" installed a Laars Mascot boiler for my in floor heating system four years ago. He did not consult with me on the unit. The mother board blew and the repair bill in total was $1,200. Please read the other reviews and take some advice away. These are poorly built units with a manufacturer who turns a blind eye to know issues. Buy anything else. It really doesn't matter. If you have a Laars – get it serviced every year or more. Next repair I'm smashing the unit and sending it back to the manufacturer.

Other Mascot Reviews

A consumer on heatinghelp.com received a frequent error code 133 from his Mascot and stated that the flame blew out when the unit tried to start. The flame sensor was changed with poor results, but then the regulator was replaced and fixed the problem. A consumer on terrylove.com had the same error code and problem and also replaced the regulator.
