Carrier 58MVP Furnace Overview

The Carrier 58 MVP furnace is a gas furnace from Carrier’s Weathermaker Infinity line of products. The 58 MVP can achieve 96% AFUE and appears to be no longer manufactured by Carrier. The current model that most closely resembles the 58 MVP is the Infinity 96 gas furnace.

The Carrier 58 MVP provides just enough heat to maintain the desired indoor temperature, while operating at a low capacity to save energy dollars. A variable speed motor and a computerized control center enable the 58 MVP to operate efficiently. The furnace has two heat exchangers; the first one uses 80% of the gas for heat and the second one uses 12 – 16%.

"Lousy Product"

1.0 rating
Very Unsatisfied

When you can not get at least 15-20 yrs out of a Carrier furnace, its time to shop elsewhere. Dealers dropping their line is not a good sign. A Good name for many years with some excellent reviews in a two stage home furnace…Forget them and run in another direction. Heater Exchanger biggest problem and they all know it… Thank you 2/16/19

"Run away from Carrier"

1.0 rating
Very Unsatisfied

Made it last 20 years but needed 2 inducer ecms, some cheaper bits, and the igniter went last week. Replacement lasted 5 days so looking at a new control board. Or I could replace the igniter relay and insert another igniter and hope that a sticking relay was the problem. Since it is February I opted for a new furnace with psc motors rather than ecm. The slight benefit of ecm is not worth the cost when they fail, which is often. Buyer beware.

"Don’t Honor Warrantee"

1.0 rating
Very Unsatisfied

Carrier offers 10yr warrantees, but refuses to honor them after 5 years. They claim small print technicalities. I own two high-end carrier furnaces, both of which crapped out at 6 years. Carrier refuses to honor their warranteee. Suggest going with another manufacturer, for both reasons.

"Carrier Furnance Heats House Well"

5.0 rating
Very Satisfied

We purchased our house in May of 2015 and the furnace was installed and working when we moved in. It has worked well this winter so far, although it has not been very cold on most days and nights. When it is cold, it turns on and heats up quickly and does heat the entire home from about 65 degrees up to 70 in about 30 minutes. So far, we have not had to repair the unit and from our understanding from the previous homeowners, they have not had to do any maintenance either. While there is not much I do not like about the furnace, I do wish that the blower attached it to was a little stronger when it is very cold. It would be nice to heat the house a little quicker when needed. I would have no hesitation in purchasing the furnace again if needed, assuming it lasts for many more years. I would also highly recommend any of my friends or family members to consider Carrier for replacing their gas furnace when the time comes for them to do so.

"Bad product and bad service"

1.0 rating
Very Unsatisfied

If you know what is good for your wallet, do not buy a Carrier furnace or after 10 years, you will be on a first name basis with your heating and cooling serviceman. Furthermore, after calling Carrier’s customer service department, it is apparent that they do not care a whit about you, the consumer. I have the feeling that I will buy my furnace several times over with the huge repair expenses that I am encountering. Never again will I buy a Carrier product nor will I consider buying a house that has a Carrier furnace. Keep your money, that company does not deserve your hard earned money.

Other 58MVP Reviews

Several posters on contractortalk.com mention problems with various aspects of the Carrier 58 MVP. The conclusion was reached in each situation that the problems related back to improper installation. One owner commented that his furnace worked perfectly after a minor installation flaw was corrected.

A question about the efficiency of the 58 MVP was discussed on the homebuyerstalk.com forum. An owner and a contractor both highly recommended the furnace and commented on the energy savings and the quiet operation of the equipment.

Hvac-talk.com lists a few discussions about the 58 MVP from owners trying to find out about fault codes. The control center of the furnace will show a code when there is a problem. Once again, the problem seems to lie in finding a reliable service technician to understand the code and fix the issue.

Question and Answer

Question:

I have a carrier 58MVP 100 furnace that displays a 4 short flashes then 5 long blinking code.

Answer:

Your status code is a two-digit number, with the first number digit determined by the number of short flashes and the second digit by the number of long flashes. Your unit has a code 45, Control Circuitry Lockout. This can be caused by a flame sense circuit failure, a gas valve relay stuck open, or a software error.
