Tempstar T9MPX Furnace Overview

The Tempstar T9MPX, also known as Smart Comfort DLX95, is a single-stage furnace that can be installed in upflow, horizontal or downflow applications. It has an AFUE rating of 95 percent.

The T9MPX uses an RPJ III primary heat exchanger made from corrosion-resistant stainless steel. It is designed with rippled edges that the manufacturer says push extra heat to the outside surface for increased efficiency. When installed using the direct vent option, clean outdoor air is used for combustion, ensuring the heat exchanger is exposed to few corrosive chemicals. Fuel efficiency is maximized through the incorporation of the multi-speed PCS circulation blower with timed delays, induced draft blower and gas valve.

The direct hot surface ignition system uses a silicon nitride ignitor, while advanced electronic controls monitor the system. Finally, noise during operation is minimized by the thermal-lined, insulated cabinet.

Tempstar Furnace Reviews

"Questionable heat-exchangers"

2.0 rating
Somewhat Unsatisfied

This is the second unit I’ve owned in the past 28 years, both had heat- xchanger problems resulting in blow-back on ignition and over- heating….resulting in unit auto-shut down, and error codes to identify the problem. Tempstar is extremely generous on warranty, but replacement labor was on me..these units are very quite and efficient…hopefully this third one will be the charm.

I am a builder in the Midwest. We have done about 200 homes a year over the past ten years and have installed Tempstar through two different contractors. I have had virtually no issues with any of these units. Just make sure your contractor has his license and seems honest.

"Expensive warranty repair"

1.0 rating
Very Unsatisfied

A/C coil went bad in 5 years. The coil to replace it didn’t have the hookups installed in the same location. The warranty only covers the inoperative part – the coil. All other parts and labor were at my expense. The bill to replace it was originally over $700. I questioned the labor and parts by the contractor and the bill was reduced to $350.

"We paid for it twice"

1.0 rating
Very Unsatisfied

We bought the furnace 8/11. On 7/12 it was leaking water all over our basement. The furnace installer came over and fixed it. The parts were free but the labor was $165.00. On 2/14 the blower went. Our house stunk. We called and someone came out and said the part was free but the labor was $348.00 We feel as though we paid for the furnace twice. What good is a warranty when the labor costs more than the parts. And, why would a brand new furnace have so many broken parts? Our old gravity furnace was installed in 1952 and lasted until 2001. I am very dissatisfied and would never buy another Tempstar furnace. I figure if we had perhaps paid more for the furnace we’d have saved ourselves the aggravation since the cost has now caught up to what an expensive furnace would have cost.

Replaced a 37 year old Armstrong with this t9mpx 95% afue unit. Extremely quiet. Never know that it is on except when near a vent. Heating bill has been reduced by nearly half. Installation was handled in a very professional manner by Gunter H & AC. The entire crew of 5 men are on top of their game. Thanks, Teddy. Couldn’t be happier.

Other T9MPX Reviews

The T9MPX is subject to a few minor complaints on other online discussion forums. For example, a homeowner on the www.justanswer.com discussion forum posts an issue where his new T9MPX has a blower that doesn’t stop running. It is concluded by an online technician that the cause for the constant running is a stuck relay on the circuit board.

In a post on hvac-talk.com, a technician talks about a recurring problem on the furnace’s startup. According to this tech, gurgling in the secondary heat exchanger suggests a problem with bad oil, apparently a problem that the manufacturer had reportedly corrected but still occurs, and leads to problems with this unit, from time to time.
