Trane XE90 Furnace Overview

The Trane XE 90 furnace has an AFUE rating of more than 90 percent, meaning that 90 percent of the fuel you use is directly turned into heat. This gas furnace has a patented heat exchanger that is designed with a serpentine-shaped channel. When air flows over the heat exchanger, hot gases are pulled through the channel by an induction vent fan, rather than escaping up the flue. According to the manufacturer, then thin exchanger features low air flow resistance, which in turn means that there is less work for the blower motor.

The Trane XE 90 has a self-diagnosis capability that utilizes a controller search system to identify any problems that need to be resolved. When there is a power or fuel interruption, the system is designed to reset automatically.

The unit is available in upflow and downflow models. The hot surface igniter replaces a pilot light. A heavy-duty, fully insulated steel cabinet was designed to reduce noise and further lower heat loss. The manufacturer also notes that the unit’s 40-inch high and 28-inch deep cabinet was designed to fit nearly any space.

"Trane dealers two pennies"

1.0 rating
Very Unsatisfied

I’ve been a Trane dealer for about 14yrs now and am a lil disappointed in the bad reviews. I’ve had fantastic luck with everything I’ve put in. I really have to believe its the installers that are to blame for the problems people are having. I’ve seen and repaired and continue to do so some really shabby work that people get gouged for. Makes me kind of sad knowing what that almighty dollar does to people. I won’t be switching brands ever and recommend some of you try another dealer because I’m assuming yours has put in the wrong size equipment (bigger isn’t always better I find a lot of) or it was slapped in and never set up properly. I work on pretty much all brands but install strictly Trane and I personally have no desire to switch to any other brand.

"Stay away from Trane"

I recently had a control board go out on my furnace. I did the responsible thing and called a professional. I usually repair things myself. He came over and diagnosed the control board. I looked up the board, which costs 70-100 dollars. The Trane only sold the control board with an update kit, containing a bunch of stuff that wasn’t broken or needed. The $80 part turned into $300. When I replace my unit next Spring, it certainly won’t be a Trane product!

"Unbelievable reliability"

I read a lot of negative reviews about the Trane furnace which I can only assume was either bad installation or just plain bad luck. Because I have had my Trane xe 90 for over 24 years and have never had a service repair call on this furnace. None. I’m not kidding. I’ve had it cleaned a couple of times over the years and that’s about it. When I need to replace this unit someday, I hope they are still making them with the quality that I got with this one.

"Great product"

5.0 rating
Very Satisfied

I read various reviews and it appears that other users are either very satisfied or very unhappy. I can’t explain the the differences but all I know is my Trane gas furnace (Xe90) is 24 years old and I have never had a service call on it. All I’ve done is cleaned it and changed the filter. It has run completely trouble free for 24 years. When I finally replace this one I will be looking at another Trane. It seems these days that most products are not made like the older ones but I hope Trane products are.

"Disappointed"

After exactly 20 years of service the blower motor of my Trane xe90 went out. Upon closer inspection the heat-exchanger was cracked in 2 places. If Trane is supposed to be a higher end product 20 years of service falls short of expectations.

Other XE90 Reviews

One writer at justanswer.com shared his problem with his Trane XE 90’s intermittent hot air operation. From time to time, his furnace runs even when the furnace box is not lit, so that cold air is forced throughout his house. Through discussions with other posters, he discovered a way to bypass the furnace fan limit operation that solved his problems.

An HVAC systems user at hvac-talk.com had a similar problem. This forum poster had a professional technician install a new pressure switch, which did not seem to solve his problem. Experts on the forum said these problems are rarely the fault of a pressure switch, and that the owner might instead check his furnace’s intake pipe to check for clogs and ensure that all drains were unplugged.

Question and Answer

Question:

Why does my Trane XE 90 show 4 blinking red lights?

Answer:

When your Trane Furnace is blinking a red light, it usually indicates there is a problem with the furnace. Different flash patterns indicate different problems. There is usually a code identification list located on the inside of the panel door. Remove the door then identify the blinking pattern compared to the list on the door. That will give you a short description of the problem the furnace is experiencing. Keep in mind the list does not provide solutions to the problem, but it should get you to the next step.
