Lennox 13hpd Heat Pump Overview

The Lennox 13hpd heat pump is considered an economical residential split-system heat pump in the company’s Merit series. Rated at 13 SEER and 7.7 HSPF, the 13hpd has earned the Good Housekeeping Seal and the Energy Star label, provided matching coil components are used as part of the split-system heat pump Energy Star criteria. This heat pump employs a high efficiency Copeland scroll compressor to help control air temperature, and the unit’s dual-fuel capacity allows the unit to be coupled with a gas furnace for increased energy savings. These components, along with the outdoor coil, ensure reliable heat transfer with low air resistance. The 13hpd heat pump is manufactured with a durable direct drive outdoor fan with a PSC fan motor for quiet operation.

The coil guard is constructed with steel wire intended to further increase its durability. Also, the heavy-gauge galvanized steel construction of the cabinet provides resistance to corrosion.

Diagnostics for the 13hpd heat pump’s defrost system use two LEDS located on the defrost board. These LEDs flash specific sequences indicating the problem for the service technician.

"What Salt Air?"

I bought my home in 2007, came with two Lennox units. After two years,we've had the a repairman or warranty company (w/c) service call every year, twice a year. The latest saga with the heat pump, is the aluminum is crumbling from around the coils. The w/c said we sprayed it with something to cause the corrosion. They won't touch it. One of my associates is in the HVAC business. He looked at it and said 'what a shame…it obvious you didn't do anything to the unit… But the w/c wont fix (replace) the unit because it still operates. The larger Lennox contraption is waiting on parts… Leaky evaporator…. I'm about to put the 2 ton unit to sleep and just spend the money to have peace of mind. The 5 ton units days are numbered too. The moral to this story, find out what your builder is buying and just say no to Lennox.

I have an 8-year-old Lennox heat pump system. Every year for the past 6 years there has been a service man sent by the home warranty people here 2 to 4 times a year. I think he is a big part of the problems also. For 3 years now the cooling fins on the heat pump have been just crumbling into powder. The indoor unit the a coil is now leaking. Of course it is R22 coolant so the unit needs to be replaced. If only the government would quit regulating everything so hard. Of course it's not under warranty & I do have a home warranty that will only replace the a coil but not the coolant. I guess it's my fault on the shabby work from the factory & the service man. It is very inefficient due to the cooling fins being gone on the heat pump approximately 1 foot from bottom up all the way around the unit. Another problem is it is hot & humid in middle Tennessee & since I live up on a mountain away from all the bs, no one will come out. I guess they are afraid if they get on top of the mountain that they are thinking they will fall off of it. I have called all makes dealers for a new replacement & they won't call back or come out. Heck some of them don't even answer their phones. I lied Carrier did come out, huh. Been without A/C for over a month now. Don't waste your money on a home warranty, buy the best units you can afford & for sure get a good honest knowledgeable service company to install it. The latter I think is most important. I will get off my soap box now. Adios

Remember those AC units that lasted 30 years? These aren't those. New 2 story house with two units, both had issues within the 1st year. Luckily they were under warranty. I've had a slow Freon leak for the last 8 years (that may have been the install). Now, in 2016, the motor is gone on one of the units. I can't believe how crappy they make things now.

"Warranty of compressor due to coolant leaks"

I replaced my old Lennox unit with a new one on 05/2014. Within a week the compressor locked up and had to be replaced. The dry chemicals emitted a green slime and I had to have the entire unit replaced. After another 5 weeks and a lot of badgering I got the unit replaced. Has run fine till 08/2015. Now the 2nd unit has leaked out the coolant and after 4 weeks I still have no AC and cannot get a straight answer from my Lennox dealer about what is going to be done. According to the Lennox dealer, Lennox Corp. wont return his calls about my unit which is well within the warranty time frame. I will never buy another Lennox due to the stress of dealing with the past year of discontent I have had to endure.

"Broke at the hottest time of the year"

We purchased our home in 2006, it was a new build. It came with a Lennox furnace and AC. During our first year we had to have it serviced as the compressor was shot (covered under warranty). In 2014 I had to have the blower replaced and the AC charged, everything was out of warranty and cost me a good penny to have fixed. Repair guy said to expect more of the same from Lennox. July 2015 and my AC is shot. The compressor and condenser are shot. It will cost $2500 to have fixed or $3000 for a new American Standard 14 SEER unit with a 10-year warranty. I'm having the new unit installed and will never buy another Lennox product.
