Luxaire LX Heat Pump Overview

The Luxaire LX is a single-stage heat pump with efficiency ratings of up to 14.5 SEER and 8.5 HSPF. The LX is available in two models, the THJF and the THJD. The THJF is Energy Star qualified, and the THJD is available as a single-phase or three-phase unit. The LX features a permanently lubricated fan motor which reduces maintenance costs and copper tubing/aluminum fin coils for increased efficiency. The unit's compressor is protected by high- and low-pressure relief valves and a solid core filter drier, and a compressor sound blanket helps reduce operating noise.

Luxaire Heat Pump Reviews

"Problems"

1.0 rating
Very Unsatisfied

We bought a Luxaire seven years ago, and it's been one problem after another. Every year since we've had it major repairs have been necessary. To name a few, a new defroster, new coil, new compressor, and a call is in today for another problem. Not a good investment.

In this day and age of trying to keep your utility bills low, I have found that this heat pump has far exceeded my expectations. I would recommend this type of equipment to anyone wanting to keep their bills lower each month.

"Noise & icing problems, Luxaire does not answer emails"

3.0 rating

Heat pump works mostly OK, but when first used in heating mode the high refrigerant pressure caused a loud rattling compressor noise to be transmitted via the coolant pipes to the house and attic unit. The contractor reduced pressure and the noise was eliminated, but I wonder if the reduced pressure may now be contributing to the outside unit icing over in wet cold weather. Either that or the automatic self-defrost does not work right. Also, I'm wondering if the reduced pressure lowered the cooling efficiency, as it seems to run a longer time to lower room temperature. Multiple attempts were made to contact both Luxaire and Johnson Controls via their web contact forms, but no response was ever received. I could not even get verification that the warranty registration had been received.

"NE Ohio heat pump"

I bought a Luxaire LHJF model 3-ton heat pump. It is 14.5 seer. I matched it with the Luxaire 3.5 ton coil. I had the txv valve installed in the field on the coil. It works great. I'm in a Northern climate (Cleveland, Ohio). I can heat my house with this thing down to 15 degrees. I run my gas furnace as backup when it is snowing to avoid defrosting a lot and when it's below 25. I tested on very cold days to see what the heat pump can do. It's also cheap to run. You can run this thing a lot and it will only add like $50 to $75 to your electric bill. Nice to have with the gas furnace as backup. No problems so far. Only had it installed since October 2009 but used a lot already. I did have some loud noise off it, but I tightened some screws and this vibration and noise stopped. Overall, the unit is very quiet. This model has a jacket around the compressor. Overall, it's a great value.

Other LX Reviews

There are very few online comments regarding the LX on HVAC forums. There is a post on hvac-talk.com asking for comparisons of the LX and a similar Trane unit. Opinions seem to be that the Trane is slightly better, but both are good units. Another post on the same site is from a homeowner asking for opinions of the LX. Most comments are positive, with several saying that it is the same unit as a York.
