Rheem Prestige Heat Pump Overview

The Rheem Prestige heat pump refers to two series of discontinued heat pumps.. One series was the two-stage communicating motor heat pumps, or RPEL-JEC models. The other series included the single and two-stage models RPNL-, RPQL-, and RPRL-JEZ.

The Prestige communicating motor heat pumps offered serial communication if installed with specific air handlers and a specific thermostat. This allowed the unit to configure automatically and provide a higher level of comfort. The RPEL models also allowed the heat pump to be wired to an existing thermostat. The communication aspect seemed to be the only major difference in the two series.

Both series of the Rheem Prestige heat pumps can achieve a SEER of up to seventeen. All of the Prestige heat pumps utilize refrigerants with no CFC's or HCFC's to harm the environment.

"Rheem 16 Heat Pump"

1.0 rating
Very Unsatisfied

We are very unsatisfied with this heat pump. Purchased in Summer of 2011 because I was told Rheem was one of the best. Every year have to have it charged. One coil and one circuit board already replaced. Was charged the last week of April for his year and 8 weeks later is has already leaked out all the coolant. We have spent a lot of of money trying to keep it going. The 10 year warranty is a joke. The service is so expensive. The unit was supposed to lower our utility bill but it only made it go up. I will never purchase a Rheem again.

I've had it for about 5 years. I had it worked on too many times trying to keep it running. $2500-3000 plus down time and aggravation. It was a problem from the start. I give up. I've never written a review before but if I can save someone the headaches I've had it will be worth it. As I write this review its about 90* in my house and I have just called my ac contractor and asked him to take this Rheem crap out and replace it with anything but. No more Rheem products. Ever!!! I'm not sure about the good reviews but this one is real.

"Gets the job done right"

We moved into our new home about five years ago. The heat pump was not working well at all, even though we had checked it before we bought the house and it seemed fine. We decided to go ahead and get it replaced with a new Rheem. It has worked well ever since we installed it four years ago, with no issues at all. I don't know about you but the thing I want most from my heat pump is to never have to think about it at all. Ever since we got the Rheem installed, that is how it has been. I used to get annoyed about the old one not working well enough quite often but now, with the new one installed, I can't remember the last time before today that I even thought about it. Hopefully it is many more years before I am thinking about it again.

Echoing many of the comments below, we are very disappointed in the Rheem heat pump we installed in 2010. We've had problems from year one. We had to replace the expansion valve the first winter. Now we need a new evaporator coil. The part is still covered, but Freon and the labor and service call (total $600) are not. For such a major home investment, a heat pump should not require major repairs this early in its life cycle.

"Really, really disappointed"

We spent $15,000 just 4 years ago having our heat pump installed. Living in Portland, Oregon, we rarely need the AC but the compressor went out about 2 weeks ago. We found out that the compressor itself was covered under warranty, which we would expect. However, we still had to pay $1050 in labor! I have tried to contact Rheem but there are no numbers listed and the online contact form cannot be submitted – it never goes! Super disappointed in this product and would not recommend it – look elsewhere.

Other Prestige Reviews

A reviewer on wetheadmedia.com writes favorably about Rheem Prestige heat pumps. The writer praises Rheem for customer service and the on-board diagnostic system as very valuable for customers.

Hvac-talk.com published a post with a customer asking for expert opinions on whether to purchase a Trane heat pump system or the Rheem Prestige heat pump system. The contractors were divided, with some preferring each brand. One pointed out that if you have a trusted installer, go with the brand that he recommends.

A similar question was posed on gardenweb.com regarding two quotes on the Rheem Prestige heat pump versus the Trane, in a cooler climate in the northwestern United States. Two respondents chose the Rheem Prestige due to better performance statistics.
