Trane XL 1200 Heat Pump Overview

The Trane XL 1200 is a discontinued split system heat pump with an efficiency of up to 13.90 SEER and 8.80 HSPF. It featured a Climatuff compressor and a spine fin coil, and a two-speed fan and a sound insulator on the compressor helped reduce operating sound levels. The cabinet was constructed of full-sided louvered panels with a baked-on powder paint finish which combined with a Weatherguard top to protect the unit from weather hazards.

"Has been reliable"

This system was installed by the previous owner in the late 90s in my townhome. The only service I've even known it to need was replacement of the outdoor fan and capacitor a couple years ago. Technician screwed that up, got the fan working but disabled the compressor by using one of those overpriced nonsense 6-way capacitors and wiring it wrong. I fixed the wiring myself. Only trouble with this system is that supplement aux heat is needed when it gets cold out. It gets to the point where HP never shuts off when it gets really cold with aux cycling on and off to maintain inside temp. I'm aware that other brands have 100% heating capacity down to 5 degrees F without aux. Wish I had one of those. I won't replace it with another Trane.

Bought in 1986. One service call in 30 years. Just replaced with a new Trane 18XLI. I know that it cannot be as good as the last one. But I could not, in good conscience, buy any other!

"I have had Many Problems Since Installing"

I have had many problems since installing a Trane heat pump. Paid for a 10 year warranty and had problems at least 4 times. Now after 10 years and 2 months, the compressor needs to be replaced. You can't stop a Trane wreck!

Unit still going strong. We replaced our old Carrier unit with a Trane in 1995. Our present service company has kept our unit running great. We have it serviced/checked in the spring and fall for a reasonable fee. Yes, we have had a few breakdowns common for it's age. Such as replacing the refrigerant valve in the summer and occasionally adding the necessary freon when it gets low. But overall after 18 years, the unit still runs fine. If it finally breaks down tomorrow, we will buy another one. This model was the cheapest one that was sold at the time in 1995,the seer rating being at 13.35)

"Horrible Heat Pump, good extended warranty."

Very Unsatisfied

Fortunately, I was offered an extended 10-year warranty. To date, I have had the compressor, various valves, sensors, and the coils replaced. During the last two winters, I had to run my heat off the inside furnace – 90% of the time >>> emergency heat. This in turn has caused my heating bill to increase by 2 1/2 times. My Trane XL1200 – super-efficient heat pump has been the worst unit I have owned in 50 years. No more Tranes for me…. Next month I will probably be looking at a new Carrier.
