Trane XL16c Heat Pump Overview

The Trane XL16c is an all-electric packaged heat pump offering up to 9 HSPF and 16.4 SEER. This Energy Star-qualified unit features two-stage operation that primarily runs on a lower function until a change in temperature is detected, at which point it automatically adjusts to a higher heat setting.

A variable-speed blower motor equipped with humidity control also contributes to consistent home comfort by distributing air evenly throughout the home and allowing homeowners to adjust the amount of humidity in the air.

The XL16c is promoted by the manufacturer for its ultra-quiet operation, thanks to an efficient motor and fan system and composite blower designed to increase air flow without excess noise. Additional components of this model include an aluminum spine coil, heavy-gauge steel cabinets, a durable weather-resistant top and plastic louver and rounded corner guards. Optional accessories, including an electric heater kit, also are available for this series.

Trane Heat Pump Reviews

"Quiet and efficient"

5.0 rating
Very Satisfied

I had my new packaged heat pump installed in Spring 2010 along with a new duct system. I chose this model because it was eligible for the federal tax incentive as well as an incentive from my power company. It is the most efficient packaged system (highest SEER/EER) that is on the market. I love that it is quiet and my electric bill has gone down. I especially love that I have been able to turn up the temperature in the winter and turn it down in the summer and still pay less. My system came with a great warranty, and I am even more happy that I have not had to utilize it at all. My only comment that could be classified as negative is the size of the system. It's huge! But then again, most packaged heat pumps are (and it is not as big as some of the other models I've seen by other brands).

"Folks, it ain't always just the equipment's fault…"

I read these reviews on Trane hvac Equipment, and try to keep an open mind & be objective as a homeowner, consumer, and a Comfort Consultant. However, I would like to make a few very valid points. Firstly, there are issues with any man-made product – that's a given, Trane included. But, when I read some of these reviews from folks slamming Trane products, I have to believe that many of these issues are a result of a shoddy contractor, doing a terrible job of installing these units. People, when a contractor is several hundred dollars or even $1000 -1500 cheaper than the last guy that gave you a quote…did you ever think, "why is he that cheap??" To even assume or imagine that the installation quality from a fly-by-night contractor, or a "Tail-Gate Timmy", that works out of his pickup truck, is going to be the same quality, professional, guaranteed Installation is absolutely absurd !! Guys, there's a Reason why He's cheap !! Also, a Quality Contractor will look at Duct Sizing & Condition, both on the Supply and Return Side. And they should most definitely Run a Manual j Heat Load to determine the proper sizing for your Home or Business. In closing, that cheap price most likely will leave a very bad taste in your mouth, when that HVAC System that you just bought starts having issues,….not always the equipment's fault folks….It's the Quality & Integrity of the Contractor !!!!!

"Piece of Junk"

Very Unsatisfied

I just paid $7000 cash for this piece of junk in May 2013. It's an XL16c that only lasted 1 month before the compressor went out. I'm in the state of Florida where you know it gets hot. I've been without an AC for 5 days now, this is B.S. I will never buy a Trane again.

"TRANE WRECK MAKE A BETTER NAME"

Very Unsatisfied

The biggest complaint I have on this unit is the defrost cycle. It's junk in the way it works and the design of the aluminum coils which freezes up anytime. It gets below 50 degrees outside, brand new in April 2009, by December 2009 unit went into defrost and never came out until I shut unit down completely, had all the electronic parts replaced including the sensors, still would go into defrost on start up but at least it didn't get stuck. Well until the following year, and they started to replace parts all over again, NOW I'M ON THE 3RD YEAR OF OWNING THIS UNIT AND ITS WORSE NOW. THEN IT WAS BEFORE THEY MADE ANY REPAIRS TO IT, BECAUSE NOW ON START UP FOR COOLING IT WILL THROW OUT HEAT FOR LIKE THE FIRST FEW MINUTES BEFORE IT SWITCHES TO COOLING AND ON HEAT CYCLE IT THROWS OUT COOL AIR ON MOST START UPS BEFORE SWITCHING TO HEAT. WELL UNLESS IT STARTS UP ON DEFROST THEN IT GETS STUCK UNTIL I SHUT IT DOWN AND START ALL OVER, BUT EACH TIME REPAIR GUYS COME OUT THEY SAY THEY CAN'T FIND NOTHING WRONG WITH IT. ALL I KNOW MY OLD UNIT THAT WAS A 11 SEERS RHEEM I NEVER HAD ANY PROBLEM WITH IT FOR 14 YEARS BEFORE THE REVERSING VALVE STARTED STICKING, AND I NEVER HAD ANY SERVICE CALLS OR REPAIRS ON IT IN ALL THAT TIME. ONLY THING I EVER HAD DONE ON IT WAS CHANGE OUT THE INSIDE FILTER. I GUESS I SHOULD OF HAD IT REPAIRED INSTEAD OF REPLACED BECAUSE I SURE GOT A LEMON ON THIS DEAL. WOULD I BUY ANOTHER TRANE- THATS A BID FAT NO. I WAS TOLD ITS THE CADILLAC OF ALL UNITS, SORRY BUT WHERE I STAND, ITS THE PINTO OF ALL UNITS.

Other XL16c Reviews

The Trane XL16c is well-received in consumer forms and review sites across the web. Professionals on sites such as hvac-talk.com encourage homeowners to look at the XL16c, stating that the unit’s components are engineered extremely well. Similarly, review site webhvac.com notes that this unit provides high-performance efficiency and climate control and is a good option for homeowners with hot and humid summers.

Despite the praise, some professionals steer customers away from this unit because of its high price point. Contractors recommend a lower tier, and less expensive, unit for homeowners in mild climates, stating that the extra cost of the unit may not be worth it.
