Trane XL20i Heat Pump Overview

The Trane XL20i is discontinued and has a rating of up to 19.00 SEER and 9.0 HSPF. The XL20i features two-stage cooling and heating and has a multi-speed motor that changes speeds to maximize comfort. The WeatherGuard top protects components, and the DuraTuff base pan is rust-proof. The XL20 has a sound insulator on the compressors to provide quiet performance. When matched with a Trane variable-speed indoor unit, the XL20i gives greater humidity control when cooling and provides warmer air during heating start up. By running the fan at a slower speed during start up, temperature variances are reduced, providing optimum home comfort.

"Don't buy a trane"

1.0 rating

I had the XL20i Trane heat pump put in because I thought it was a good system. I was one of the worst decisions I have ever made. About 4 years after it was installed it started shutting down for no apparent reason. I had the system checked by several HVAC technicians but they could not fix it. When I did finally call Trane customer service for help and file a complaint I was told they had a backlog and they would get back to me .When they did call me back 4 months later I was told they would give me a $500 dollar rebate if I bought another Trane system. The only thing worse than a Trane heat pump is their customer service.

"Not happy with Trane XL20i"

I purchased the Trane XL20i in Feb 2010. I have had yearly tune-ups, but still have problems almost every year and need a service call. Sometimes twice in the same year. The issues have varied, but most of the issues seem to happen when the weather is cooler. So far, the 10-year warranty has covered the big expenses, but I still get hit with bills for recharging the unit. It's incredibly frustrating to pay for expensive equipment and have continual issues with it. Once the warranty is gone, no more repairs. I'll be looking to replace with another brand.

"Expensive to repair"

I own a XL20i that was installed less than 4 years ago, a duel fuel system, with a zc95m high efficient furnace. 16.5 seer heat pump just recently the air outside got warm and the ac should have kicked had to call my installer to look at it and do an annual tune up. The service tech said the bigger compressor was done and had to be replaced, seemed odd since we had a lot of mild weather these last few years. The compressor was under warranty thank God, 1800 dollars, but labor costs were over 2000 to install new part. Now I know why that model has been discontinued, very quiet, very efficient and very expensive to repair.

"What's going on here"

Had to replace a 12 year old, 4 ton Trane XL 1200; purchased an XL20i and had it installed by a licensed, highly rated HVAC firm a year and half ago. Great system, gets its seasonal inspection, heating, cooling no problem. Can't say I'm saving a lot of money because my electric costs seem to be increasing every year. Then 2 weeks ago, the house seemed cold and when the heat kicked on it seemed to take to longer to warm. When it finally warmed up to shut the thermostat, the air exchanger kept running for another 2 hours. Long story short, needed to replace a pressurized transducer (under warranty) which prevented the compressor from kicking in. Not happy about a residential A/C heating unit not even one and a half years old needing a new critical part.

"Hard to start a Trane."

I have three 4 ton, XL20i dual fuel heat pumps. They are six years old and each one has had multiple, major failures since installed. Heat exchanger failure, evaporator coils cracked (twice), multiple circuit board failures, blower failure, gas valve failure, thermostat failure, etc. One air handler could not be repaired by Trane after six weeks of repair attempts. The entire air handler had to be replaced. Will never buy Trane again.
