Trane XR13 Heat Pump Overview

The XR13 heat pump, currently produced by Trane, can achieve a SEER rating of up to 14.50 and an HSPF of up to 8.50. Trane categorizes the XR13 as one of its "high efficiency" heat pumps, a category that sits just below the manufacturer's "super efficiency" and "ultra efficiency" labels. The XR13 uses R-410A refrigerant. Trane's XR13 is lower in cost than the XR15 and the XB14, but similar in efficiency ratings.

Not bad for saving money but it did not last. Once the 10 year install was up the compressor failed. I had it maintained well yearly and the house was new with super good insulation top to bottom and top of the line Pella windows. Plus I got sick and did not even live in my new home for almost 2 years so the system ran on low in the winter and summers during that time. It could have been a bad install. I will find out next week as I am getting a new Trane XL18i heat pump and Hyperion tam7 electric heat air handler. Why another Trane? They rate them good today but heck no company today who sells these systems run like they did 25 to 40 years ago. My Mom and Dad put in a top of the line Heil heat air handler electric furnace and central matching ac unit in 1974. The central ac went out 22 years later and the electric air handler ran for 30 years with only 2 heat strips replaced. Cheap! And now the electricity is high of course so we must go to heat pumps. I do not expect to get 20 to 30 years out of this system. I'll be lucky to get 15. Which is truly disgusting. I mean come on people. Think back. But I'm prepared this time. While the 18 will save a lot of money over the coming years and in 10 years still be rated pretty good on efficiency, I bought an extended warranty so I will pay nothing for the warranty period. And I got all this for less than 8500. I'm tired of being burned by outsourcing and lousy installers and inferior parts and finally, the government forcing higher efficiency which you can only save so much. Get rid of the big powerful power company monopolies and outsourcing and bring back local American workers with merit hiring and dump that federal reserve bank! Paper money is worthless today. Then you will see smiling customers again.

I had two systems installed. The basement system has had two failures of the air handler including some type of valve that they admitted had been recalled, yet I still had to pay labor of $450 on that one. Now at 9 years of age, the compressor has failed as well as the starter for the blower motor. $2200 for a new compressor installed and $675 for the blower starter. I have owned Lennox in the past and gone 20 years or more with nothing but minor wear issues. These are just poorly made and they never honor their warranty unless forced. I registered yet they say they can't find a record so I'm screwed again.

We moved into a new house. within 3 months the unit would not run. It threw a breaker, this symptom persisted for 3 years straight. We had one year reprieve and it's down again. When I asked why we couldn't have a new one I was told it was rebuilt and like a new one. Well it's broken again, the 5th year, with all the repairs we could have bought a new one. Clearly this was a lemon and should have been replaced, I'm not likely to recommend anyone buy a Trane.

"Bad air conditioner, bad company."

Made a noise at startup. Never used, didn't even get to send the warranty in. They will only repair, not replace the condenser. $5000 spent and they will only repair. Never will use aTrane product again, which is related to Ingersoll Rand.

"Warning: Don't buy a Trane!"

I bought a Trane XR13 in 2009 and it has been nothing but a money pit of costly repairs. Something is leaking or breaking several times a year. Don't buy a Trane. You will be paying a lot for a cheap product.

Other XR13 Reviews

A question is asked on gardenweb.com regarding the Trane XR13. A homeowner has been provided a quote for, specifically, the 2.5 ton XR13. An expert responds that this unit is probably too large for the home size mentioned; two experts recommend that if the questioner does purchase this unit, he should make sure it includes a variable-speed air handler for greater comfort, and savings in electricity.

Another homeowner posts on hvac-talk.com about several quotes he received on a new heat pump; the quotes include the Trane XR13. Once again, an expert states that the homeowner should request a variable-speed air handler with this model. The contractor notes that it will increase the price, but will be worth it in the long run due to savings.

A thread on gardenweb.com reveals a homeowner debating with contractors regarding a quote for a Trane system, including the XR13 heat pump, and a Bryant system. An expert concludes that the Trane system is better than the Bryant system quoted. The SEER and HSPF numbers are higher on the Trane system than the comparably-priced Bryant system.

XR13 Warranty

Trane offers a 10-year limited warranty on the compressor of the XR13. The outdoor coil also carries a 10-year limited warranty. The same warranty applies to the internal parts. The customer must register the XR13 to activate the warranty within 60 days of installation.
