York Affinity YZE Heat Pump Overview

York's Affinity YZE heat pump offers 15 SEER and up to 9.8 HSPF efficiency. The unit, discontinued by the manufacturer after 2007, ranges from 2 to 5 ton units, is Energy Star-qualified and uses R410-refrigerant.

The manufacturer promotes the Affinity YZE's "whisper soft" operation due to a two-stage scroll compressor and York's QuietDrive System. This system includes a swept-wing fan, a composite base pan and a compressor pan designed to reduce noise levels.

A durable, galvanized steel cabinet with a powder-coated finish, easily accessible panel for simple maintenance and an intuitive control system are additional features of the YZE. The Affinity YZE was part of the York Affinity series.

"Flawless performance on a so so install"

5.0 rating
Very Satisfied

I purchased a house with an Affinity 5t yze series heat pump (combined with a Goodman gks9 gas furnace) and it has been excellent and reliable since originally installed 10+ years ago. I've owned the house for close to 8 years now, and any issues the system has experienced have been due to the Goodman portion of the system (controller board and drafter inducer motor failures, and significant air leaks in its door seams despite marketing claims of < 2% cabinet leakage). The HVAC installation wasn't a particularly conscientious one, and I recently fixed a waft of input and output air leaks, plus re-insulated the vapor line, but the York heat pump has been quiet and reliable despite the issues. If I ever need to replace / upgrade it or get something for a different house, York will be at the top of my list!

"3 compressors in 8 years!"

My York heat pump was installed in 2010 by a reputable installer. In 2016 the first compressor blew. York covered the compressor; not the labor. There were 3 expensive labor calls after installation in 2016 and 2017. Then in January of 2018 the compressor blew again. The matter has not been resolved. We are still on emergency heat. York says it's not their problem but the repair people. My repair company comes with sterling reviews and a long history of heat pump work. They have an excellent reputation. It seems York does not. When I call York they just pass me down the phone chain with no response. I have spent over $2200 in the last 2 years and still have a no functioning York heat pump. I would like to see action so I can write a more positive review

"Terrible product"

I installed two of these units eight years ago. By year four both coils had to be replaced. …Mexican made junk. I've had to service them every year since. I would never buy a York heat pump again.

"York bad company to work with"

2.0 rating

Unit had a problem in less then a year and was serviced several times before they decided to replace the coil unit. This was done fairly quickly and the unit seems to be working. My big problem is that I received a bill for the shipping charge of $90.32. While this isn't a huge amount, after spending over $8000.00 on this unit and buying the extended warranty I don't think that I should have to pay for shipping on a part that was defective from the company. I will not recommend York to anyone nor ever buy from them again. This is just the case of another corporation that will not stand behind the products they are manufacturing.

"Poor heat pump install by contractor"

2.0 rating
Somewhat Unsatisfied

The heat pump was installed by Aire One in September, 2009. After 4 winters of a non-performing heat pump and over 30 service calls, I finally had to get York's heat pump main troubleshooter (George Brown, college HVAC instructor) to discover the multiple install errors. It was overcharged, which caused excessive noise and an eventual leak, and wired wrong; generally an overall poor install. That was in February, 2013. In January, 2014, the unit totally froze up. I had to ask the regional sales manager for Ontario to intervene. He authorized a replacement unit. Aire One was supposed to return to service the unit this year in January as per the 10-year warranty, but the Aire One service manager told me that they have too much time and money in this install and would not be honouring the warranty any further. Quality equipment installed by contractors who are substandard. Bottom line – quality equipment is only as good as the installers.

Other Affinity YZE Reviews

Reviews around the web are generally positive for York's Affinity line. Contractors on gardenweb.com state that the YZE is top-tier unit with durable, high-quality components. Homeowners on the same forum report the unit is quiet, reasonably priced and carries solid energy efficiency ratings.

Contractors on hvac.com highly recommended the unit to homeowners shopping for a new heat pump, with special note of its warranty and quality compressor.

Despite various positive reviews, consumers on hvac-talk.com show reservations with York's service and support after installation, mentioning it may not be as comprehensive as with other brands. Threads on gardenweb.com also indicate some worry about corrosion damaging the system's coil over time.
