Daikin Industries Ltd., established in 1924, is involved in several lines of business, including residential, light commercial and packaged air conditioners and heat pumps. Air conditioning today makes up roughly 89 percent of the company’s business, and in 2017 the company reported net sales of approximately $18.4 billion USD. Daikin AC has U.S. headquarters in New York.
Daikin was founded in Japan in 1924 and began producing packaged air conditioners in 1951. The company began marketing residential air conditioning systems in 1958 and heat pumps in 1969. Daikin America Inc. was established in 1991. In 2005, the company added Daikin Holdings (USA) Inc. and the sales company Daikin AC (Americas) Inc. to its list of holdings. In August 2012, Daikin acquired Goodman Global Group Inc.
Daikin’s residential air conditioners are ductless units with an outdoor condensing unit joined to multiple indoor units. Ductless central air can be a good choice in homes that are being retrofitted for central air but do not have traditional ductwork installed. Residential models include split and multi-split systems, including wall-, floor- and ceiling-mounted units, and the commercial-grade SkyAir.
Daikin Industries says its 2015 environmental target goals included reducing emissions by 30 million tons in emerging countries. The company has reduced greenhouse gas emissions by 65% against 2005 levels, just short of their 67% target. The company started a “Forests for the Air” project in 2014 and continues to focus on helping spread the use of products such as air conditioners using HFC-32, a low global warming potential refrigerant.
While Daikin’s Annual Report indicates that the company maintains a sizeable reserve to manage warranties, they do not market their residential or commercial air conditioners on the basis of the strength of their warranty. Warranties range from one to seven years, based on the specific systems and parts. The extended warranty provides coverage from five to ten years. On the commercial and industrial side, Daikin markets a networked maintenance system that automatically reports problems for companies with a maintenance contract.
