Gibson Brand Overview

Gibson Manufacturer Overview

Gibson Heating and Cooling manufactures residential and light commercial air conditioners, heat pumps and gas furnaces. Gibson is a subsidiary of Electrolux, which had net sales of approximately $13.5 billion in 2017. However, the trademark is licensed in North America by Nordyne, which also markets heating and cooling equipment under the brand names Frigidaire, Tappan, Kelvinator and Philco.

Corporate History

Two companies, both founded in 1877, led to the creation of the Gibson brand. The first was Belding-Hall Co., an “icebox” manufacturer founded by Joshua Hall in Belding, Mich. The second was a refrigerator producer founded in Greenville, Mich., by Frank and John Gibson. Gibson acquired Belding-Hall in 1908. For much of its history, the company has focused on refrigerators, although its website notes that in 1953 Gibson introduced an ozone lamp in its room air conditioner that was designed to remove room odors and in 1959 it introduced to its air conditioners an “air sweep” method of air distribution.

In 1956, Hupp Corp. acquired Gibson, when in 1967 Hupp Corp. was itself acquired by White Consolidated Industries (WCI). In 1986, Sweden-based AB Electrolux acquired WCI. In North America, Nordyne is the exclusive licensee of the Gibson trademark. Nordyne was founded more than 65 years ago in St. Louis and is a subsidiary of Nortek Inc.
