Payne Heating & Cooling makes central air conditioners, gas furnaces and heat pumps. Payne is a part of United Technologies Corporation’s Building and Industrial Systems division. UTC had net sales of $59.8 billion in 2017.
Payne was founded in 1914 and in 1933 introduced the first forced-air, down-discharge furnace. In 1945 the company formed Affiliated Gas Equipment Inc. (AGE) with companies Day & Night and Bryant. Carrier bought AGE in 1955, and then made Payne the ‘P’ in the BDP Co. in 1974. Payne separated from BDP in 1996 to form Payne Heating & Cooling and is now owned by United Technologies Corporation, which acquired Carrier in 1979.
Payne offers a 96 percent AFUE condensing gas furnace, the PG96VAT, along with three models of 95 percent AFUE gas furnaces, the PG95XAT, PG95S and PG92S, and three lines of 80 percent efficient gas furnaces, the PG8M, PG8MEA and PGMVA. In addition, the company offers air conditioners reaching up to 17 SEER and heat pumps from 13 to 16 SEER. The company continues to make high efficiency its priority with the introduction of new products that reach Energy Star ratings.
